It’s Giving Tuesday, Let’s Feed it Forward to Those in Need
To all my fellow tech CEOs—don’t restock your cafés — instead divert funds to those in need this holiday season.
Today is Giving Tuesday, a movement to create an international day of giving at the beginning of the holiday season. It’s also a time for all of us to reflect on what we are thankful for and how we can make the world a better place. If you’re in tech, you probably have a lot to be thankful for. Money continues to flow into innovative companies and, despite the recent corrections in the market, we’re in one of the longest bull markets of our lifetime. But we also know not everyone is as fortunate—in the U.S. alone 40 million people face hunger and the terrible feeling of not knowing where their next meal is coming from.
Most people working in tech know how lucky we are. We are generally optimistic people with a belief that technology can be a powerful force to change the world for the better. The tech industry is also one that puts its people front and center, recognizing that our knowledge workers are building tomorrow’s future. This has led to many tech companies investing in great offices and perks to attract and retain the best employees. Many employees in today’s tech workforce have come to expect a great coffee bar, 24-hour snacks, celebrations and even full meals available at the office.
Last week, the week of Thanksgiving, LogMeIn’s U.S. offices participated in an internal campaign, Feeding it Forward, where we did not stock our café shelves or serve meals and instead diverted what we would normally spend on office snacks and other perks to Feeding America. Feeding America gathers food before it goes to waste and partners with local food banks across the country such as the Greater Boston Food Bank. We had an overwhelmingly positive response to this campaign and it even inspired many to donate to Feeding America on their own and schedule additional volunteer days in the community.
If for one week during the holidays or in 2019, every tech company diverted what they spend on snacks and other office perks and instead donated it to organizations like Feeding America, we could help feed and bring relief to families who are in need in our local communities.
Will you join us to Feed it Forward?
